Premarital Exam
A premarital examination with your doctor can be a helpful tool in preparing you for marriage, especially if you are not yet sexually active. A discussion with your doctor about your anatomy, what to expect, and how to care for yourself properly provides a safe place for any questions or concerns you may have. Below we've compiled a list of FAQs and topics we hope you will find helpful!
What Does a Premarital Exam Include?
A typical premarital exam includes a brief health history, a complete physical exam, discussion of birth control options, and a brief overview of intercourse and foreplay. A pelvic exam is done to determine if there is a need for dilators.
When Should I Schedule a Premarital Exam?
A pre-marital exam should be scheduled at least one month before your wedding day. However, two to three months before is preferable. We recommend calling to make an appointment as soon as you are engaged.
What Questions Should I Ask?
Ask any question you have related to birth control and intercourse.
Who Should I Make an Appointment With?
You can see either an OB/GYN, Nurse Practitioner or Certified Nurse Midwife for your exam.
Should I Bring My Fiance to the Exam?
It's really up to you. It can be helpful to have his questions answered too. During the exam portion, he can wait in the waiting room.
