Gestational Diabetes

Pregnancy

Gestational Diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. All OB patients are tested for gestational diabetes during a glucose tolerance test given in the second trimester. You can learn more about the test here.

In the event that gestational diabetes is found during pregnancy, you will work with a diabetic specialist at the hospital who will check your blood sugars, and administer medication, if needed. Gestational diabetes usually resolves with delivery, but a small percentage of women will continue to have the disease. To make sure your diabetes does not continue after delivery, your blood sugar will continue to be monitored and you will be given another glucose test at your 6 week postpartum visit.
