Delivering With The Orem Midwife Group – Cassie’s Birth Story

Birth Stories

Any scare with a pregnancy, no matter how big or small, can take a toll on you. We love how positive and uplifting and determined Cassie was throughout her birth!

I saw the Valley Women’s Health Orem Midwives for my pregnancy. I loved them all!

My pregnancy was pretty smooth sailing thankfully. I was due December 8th and on December 1, I had an appointment. I was feeling like the baby was never going to come. That night I started not feeling well, so I went to bed early. I woke up at midnight because I was bleeding and I felt like I had a fever. I called the on-call midwife, which was Sue Schlegelmilch, and she told me to wait an hour and if I was still bleeding, to go to the hospital and make sure everything was okay. Well an hour later I was still bleeding, so we packed everything up and headed to the hospital. I was having regular contractions and was dilated to a 4.5cm and I also had a high fever, so they wanted to keep me. They discovered that I had an infection in my uterus, and so they quickly got me hooked up and on antibiotics. I got an epidural. Sue came in to talk with me and she was super calming. She broke my water and I went from a 5 to a 6 immediately. A couple hours later, I was at a 10. They had me rest and descend for about an hour, and then I started pushing! Sue had left, and Jen Krebs came to check on me. They told me that because of my infection, it was possible that the baby would have an infection and have to go to the NICU. Pushing was really hard for me. It took 3 hours! Jen was right there with me though and so calm and helpful. I remember when we hit 3 hours, she asked if I wanted to try one more time, or if she should call the doctor to come help with forceps and I said one more time please! And out he came :) He did have an infection and had to be taken to the NICU.

My birth story was definitely different than I imagined it to be, but through that whole experience, I was so grateful for both Sue & Jen and how helpful and calming they were. I truly felt like I was in good hands! We named our baby Brigham and he was 8 lbs 10 ounces and 21 inches long.

I recommend Valley Women’s Health to everyone! I Seriously had such a great experience. Even at all my visits, the receptionists, the nurses, they were always so kind. There was a nurse named Megan, and she just made me feel like her best friend every time I visited. I was so grateful for her!
