Round Ligament Pain
Pregnancy Resources
Achy, crampy or sharp sensations on one or both sides of your lower abdomen are typically round ligament pain. You may start feeling it around 14 weeks, but you can experience at any time throughout the remainder of your pregnancy.
What Causes It?
Several ligaments surround and support your uterus during pregnancy. The round ligament connects the front part of the uterus to your groin. As your uterus grows, the supporting ligaments stretch making them more likely to become strained. Sudden movements can also cause the ligament to tighten quickly causing a sudden, jabbing feeling.
What Does It Feel Like?
Sharp, sudden pain that only last a few seconds or achy, crampy sensations. It typically affects the right side but it can happen on both. Rapid movements like sneezing, coughing, laughing or rolling over in bed can cause the pain.
What Can I Do to Relieve the Pain?
- drink water
- take Tylenol
- apply heat
- empty your bladder
- rest
- exercise
- stretch (try putting your hands and knees on the floor, lowering your head, and pushing your backside into the air)
