Provider Feature: Kory A. Harward, D.O.

Provider Feature

Dr. Harward is working in our newest office that’s serving the Vineyard and Orem area. As a graduate of Des Moines University-College of Osteopathic Medicine and upon completion of residency at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio he’s been a practicing physician since 2007. He loves the opportunity to develop relationships with his patients and witness the miracle of birth everyday. We hope you enjoy getting to know more about Dr. Harward below!

Why did you choose to become an OBGYN?

When we did our rotations in residency I fell in love with the specialty. Out of all the other specialities I fell in love with being able to do both surgery and take care of patients. I also love the ability to develop relationship with our patients. In Obstetrics, you have a better chance of developing nice relationships with your patients since you are able to go through one of the most important times of their lives. Plus, being able to witness the miracle of birth everyday is nice. It’s really nice!

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day starts early in the morning, either rounding on patients that are in the hospital or in surgery – hysterectomies, gynecologic surgeries or cesarian section. Clinic starts at 9 am and we see patients all day. Deliveries will be spread out throughout the day. Here in the Vineyard/Orem office, we deliver our own patients, which is a bit different that the other groups. If we have a patient delivering, we leave for the hospital for that.

What do you love about Valley Women’s Health?

I’ve been with Valley Women’s Health for almost a year. Dr. McCarter and I were partners up in Orem before this. I definitely think that Valley allows us to provide comprehensive care for women. We have multiple specialties to draw from, from urogynecology to gynecologic oncologists to obstetrics and gynecology. Yeah, so I think we are able to provide more comprehensive care for women. This allows me to provide the best care being able to draw on those specialities. When an abnormal pap smear or ultrasound with an ovary that looks potentially malignant shows up, we can call our oncologist for an appointment. It becomes a more personal relationship and is much easier for our patients. It allows us the ability to take care of our patients more easily.

What do you wish all women could know?

I want them to know the importance of preventative care. Getting annual exams and mammograms at the schedules times is so important. For women who are considering pregnancy it’s important to make sure that medical conditions such as high blood pressure, thyroid disease or asthma are under control. Preventative care makes pregnancy healthier.

What is your favorite thing about your career?

I love it all! Being able to assist with bringing a new baby into this world is the best.  There is nothing more precious than seeing a newborn baby take its first breath.  I am blessed to be able to witness this miracle.

Tell us about where you grew up and about your family?

I grew up in Payson, Utah, graduated high school in 1991 and served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in San Antonio, Texas.  I have three older brothers, all of which still live close by.  My wife is from Provo and went to Provo High School.  After graduating from Brigham Young University in Microbiology, we spent four years in Iowa for medical school and another 4 years in Ohio for residency before moving back home.  We now have three boys.  My oldest is serving a mission in West Virginia. My middle son is a junior at Provo High School and my youngest is attending Dixon Middle School.

What is your favorite sweet treat?

Probably Rice Krispy treats or my mom’s homemade sugar cookies

Tell us three people who have shaped the person you are?

First would be the Savior, who is the ultimate example of how to live my life.  Second would be my mom and dad, who have taught me the value of hard, honest work along with countless other lessons that have shaped me from my youth. Third would be my wife, who has shown me the power of family and who is the glue that holds us all together.

What song can always put you in a good mood?

Usually anything from the 80’s hairbands.  I always argue with my boys that Guns n Roses is the best band of all time.  They strongly disagree.

What is your Personal Motto?

Details Matter! (pay attention to details)

Do you play a musical instrument?

I played the trumpet when I was younger.  I thought I was pretty good until my wife secretly sold it at a garage sale one year.
